1. Please increase Baron Rivendares mount drop

This isn’t going to happen. And why would you want a boring old ground mount when Cataclysm is going to open up the old world to flyers?

2. Have you ever let someone die in WoW?

This is an interesting question. The blue in this case has let someone get to low health to  get a point across but never let them die. I’ve been known to let DPS die if they’re repeatedly pulling aggro in a fight. I find that sometimes it’s just easier to complete a fight without worrying about healing bad DPS. Most times the rest of the group is good enough that four manning something isn’t a big deal. I’ve never done much in the way of raiding, though, and it’s likely a whole different mechanic when you’re in a 10-man or a 25-man.

3. Not understanding the Cata goals and idea

This is a continuation of a thread that I covered in the last edition of the Morning Blues. There’s a lot going on in this one, so I’m just going to give quick summaries that you can click through and read if you’d like.

5. Epic Flying — Is it still useful these days?

I always buy epic flying for my characters as soon as they hit 70 and are able to get it. But I have a lot more money floating around my account than most people seem to have. I still think that the difference between regular end epic flying is like night and day even with the speed increases, and it made leveling my priest a breeze.

10. Why nerf Battleground xp?

Battleground experience isn’t being nerfed. The amount of honor gained from battleground kills is being doubled and the amount of experience is being cut by 50%. If you passed elementary math then you’ll realize that this results in no net change whatsoever in the amount of experience gained. Blizz doesn’t want to double experience and honor.

1. Mages and their food.

The OP wants to know why mages aren’t more like their real life counterparts given their relatively sedentary lifestyle of sitting back and hitting things from a distance. That coupled with their constant diet of fatty conjured foods should equal a class of overweight spellcasters even if you take all of the running around they do into account, right?

Ancilorn says: They eat alot, but remember, anything they ate of a conjured nature would disappear from their digestive tracts once they logged out for 15+ minutes.

Now that’s what I call a clever diet.

2. Too many emblems?

The OP wants to know why there are so many emblem conversions for older sets of gear. Blizzard keeps them there so that people who haven’t played in awhile but have a crapload of emblems stacked up don’t get upset if they do decide to spend some of their old cash.

3. 9 Ocu afks in a row

The short version: much QQ about Oculus.

The long version: The OP is upset because he got tossed into Oculus 9 times in a row and had to /afk out of them each time instead of taking the 20-30 minutes required to finish the damned dungeon. He is now convinced that there is some sort of vast Blizzard conspiracy to force him to run the same dungeon.

The blue lets out the tantalizing tidbit that the dungeon system isn’t entirely random. But it’s also not designed to divine which dungeon a player hates the most and then repeatedly assign them to that dungeon. Sometimes you get a run of bad luck when dealing with random chance. Anyone who regularly invests in the lottery or tried to get a Big Love Rocket has had an object lesson in probability’s capricious whims.

4. Armor pen in Cataclysm

The OP wants to know if his gear is going to be rendered useless with some of the stat changes and consolidations in Cataclysm. Ghostcrawler assures him that they are going to try and balance out stats for old gear so that it isn’t rendered instantly obsolete, and promises a longer post on exactly what they’re doing and how.

5. Do tanks need resilience?

OP wants to know if resilience affects a chance to get critted in PvE. Word from on high is that it can work to prevent crit, but that it’s a poor substitute for raising Defense. So only rely on +Resilience gear as a placeholder for +Defense gear if you don’t have immediate access to the latter for some reason. Also, +Resilience does nothing to help bear tanks.

Frost Lotus drop rates have been increased by 50%, likely to meet the heavy increase in demand thanks to a renewed interest in raiding thanks to the release of ICC.

1. Big Love Rocket

The OP starts off the thread by buying into the gambler’s fallacy that attempting to get something rare multiple times will magically skew the laws of probability in your favor.  What he doesn’t realize is that the 1% drop rate for a rare item means that the 1 in 100 resets every time you go into a dungeon and try to get said item and is spread out across all players on all servers running the dungeon.  It doesn’t mean that you run the dungeon 100 times and the item will magically appear.  The blue poster helpfully points out this error.

2. Not understanding the Cata goals and idea

Short story: people don’t understand how the simplification of stats is going to affect the game in Cataclysm.  The whole post could probably be avoided if the OP bothered to read a little about a subject before going to the forums to rant about it.

That’s right everyone, patch 3.2.2 is being applied to the servers even as I type this.  That means it’ll be time to check your UI to make sure you don’t have any borked addons and pray that Blizzard isn’t introducing any “features” that will cause the game to crash or make us unable to login tonight.

I’ve included the full text of the patch notes after the cut for your convenience, but here are a few of the highlights:

  1. The Lich King is now available for your killing pleasure in Frostwing Halls.
  2. Brann will now walk faster in Halls of Stone.  About damned time.
  3. All healing abilities are getting a 10% nerf when used in battlegrounds, arena, or Wintergrasp.
  4. Arena Season 8 is live!

1. passive/boring vs. fun/interesting talent

Blizzard is going to be making some changes to the talent trees in Cataclysm that move away from utility passives and towards sexy active abilities.

Vaneras says: All talent trees will be changed in Cataclysm so that there will be less emphasis on valuable but boring talents that only provides passive increases to damage or healing. Basically we want to make the fun niche and utility talents more available and attractive by making them feel less expensive.

The blue post is just notifying everyone that they’re making it a sticky, but the guide itself is a worthwhile read for anyone considering starting some world PvP.

Blizzard poster Bornakk has posted a clarification regarding the undocumented changes to Alterac Valley in patch 3.2.2 yesterday:

With the launch of patch 3.2.2 today there have been some changes to the Alterac Valley battleground and we wanted to clarify what exactly has been done.

Level 80 characters now have their own bracket and there is a separate bracket for characters that are levels 70 to 79. This change was originally planned for patch 3.3 but it was accidently applied to the current patch 3.2.2. As we had already intended to make this change so that players who are leveling play together and players who are at the level cap play together, we will be keeping the bracket setup this way, but the level of the bosses in the brackets below level 80 will be reduced to compensate.

The most interesting thing about Bornakk’s post is that the changes were “accidentally” applied. You really have to wonder what’s going on at Blizzard HQ when a major change like this, for good or bad, just slips into the game without a chance for testing, reaction, or commentary from the playerbase. A good number of players are understandably upset that AV is now a less viable leveling alternative to running the same tired old quests, and people at level 80 are miffed that there are now far fewer battles available in what was once the honor cash cow of the Battlegrounds system.

The changes to the brackets are probably for the best in the long run, but putting them in with no warning definitely wasn’t the way to implement it. I normally don’t have many bad things to say about Blizzard, but they really dropped the ball on this one.

The whining:
Blizzard had a problem when they went to launch their first Warcraft expansion.  In old school WoW good epic gear was hard to come by.  You either had to get together with thirty-nine of your best friends at least two nights every week to run raid content on the PVE side or spend twelve to fourteen weeks grinding out honor and battlefield marks in the rank-based PVP system of the time.  This meant that the best gear in the game was concentrated in a small subset of the population who had the time and the masochistic desire to gear up under these flawed old school systems.  Put simply, there was potential for that gear disparity to further fragment the population into the haves and the have-nots due to gear issues.

The Nerf:
Blizzard didn’t so much need old content as they just buffed up new content to the point that Burning Crusade greens and blues outpaced most epic tiered gear from the old world within a few levels of hitting Outland.  This tended to annoy old-school 40-man raiders who spent pages and pages on the forums trying to convince themselves and anyone else who would listen that the epic gear they spent months gathering had some innate advantage over Outland items with superior stats simply because their gear had purple text in their names, but the rest of the more casual gaming population just shrugged and rolled with the changes.

The Inevitable Backlash:
Everyone who didn’t have epic gear was happy with the substantial upgrade and felt like gods as they blew through new content on their way to flying mounts and a date with the Burning Legion.  Everyone who spent the three months leading up to Burning Crusade raiding for gear that they had deluded themselves into thinking would give them an advantage over other players when the expansion hit spent more time on the forums griping about the changes than they spent actually playing through the new content.  Then they got over it and moved on to repeatedly raiding with twenty-four of their best friends instead of thirty-nine and life went on.

2. Burning Crusade Dungeons:

The problem:
Remember all that business two paragraphs up about needing thirty-nine best friends to even have a hope of getting decent gear?  Well that annoyed a lot of people who were unwilling to invest the time and scheduling commitment of a part time job for a video game.  The logistics of doing any sort of progression after hitting level 60 was frustrating to the point of turning more casual players off the game entirely.

Ironically enough, one of the most powerful demons in Warcraft takes fewer people to down than a paltry old world dragon.

The nerf:
Raid content was reduced from forty man to twenty-five man across the board in Burning Crusade after latter-day original WoW raid dungeons like Ahn Qiraj 25 proved popular and workable.  Additional dungeons that only required five or ten players that offered epics at slightly lower quality than the twenty-five man dungeons and the ability to turn in badges from those dungeons for epic loot made it even easier for more players to gear up.

The Inevitable Backlash:
The more you endure to achieve a goal, the more you’re willing to go to ridiculous lengths to convince yourself and the world of your love for that something.  It’s why fraternity and sorority pledges look back on hazing with fond memories, why Playstation 3 early adopters try to pretend there are good games on their system, and why former forty-man raiders still look back on that dark period of the game with fuzzy butterflies in their stomach.

The reality is that scaling raid content for smaller groups was a smart move that allowed more people to see endgame content and get nice gear while still allowing for positively godly gear for those with the inclination to push at the lunatic fringe of content progression.  The same is true of PVP revamps that allows casual gamers to get good gear while still leaving an opening for the most hardcore with the arenas.  But that won’t stop an old school pre-BC raider from talking your ear off about how much they loved spending thirty hours a week waiting for everyone to get online and gather in Blackrock Spire for another wipe on Ragnaros.  I’ll let you decide who’s on the right side in that debate between old school and new content.

3. Gold Farmers

The Problem:
Believe it or not, there was a time when gold farmers were just that: farmers.  In old Warcraft they could be found in high level zones like Azshara where the gold per hour farmed ratio was pretty good.  The biggest problem they created was economic destabilization as they flooded server markets with items and gold.  This flood of items on the Auction coupled with all the people buying gold led to rampant inflation that started to create a cycle where only the rich could afford to buy items, and the quickest way to get rich was to buy gold from the gold farmers which just fed the inflationary cycle.

The Solution:
Gold farming was known but tolerated for the first year or so of the game, but then the farmers started to get greedy by advertising in-game and generally being a nuisance.  Blizzard responded with an aggressive campaign to ban gold farmer accounts and even started to go after people buying the gold.  Thousands of accounts were banned in early 2006 and server economies went into freefall as players adjusted to a World of Warcraft where they had to go out and farm money themselves rather than relying on a cheap cash infusion from China.  Sound familiar?

The Inevitable Backlash:
Talk about being careful what you wish for.  Banning all of the gold farmers who were farming items semi-legitimately in game using bot programs and Chinese laborers strapped to a computer in 24 hours a day forced gold selling operations to move underground.  The result has been a rise in keyloggers, account theft, and in game scams that rely on stealing to gather gold rather than farming.  So I guess that crackdown worked great, trading a little inflation for an organized international gold selling cartel willing to break game rules and bend the law in the name of profit.

The Problem:
Blizzard created a massive online world based on an ongoing conflict between two factions that had been at war for decades.  So naturally they would have absolutely no PVP reward system in place when the game launched.  Eventually they implemented a system where players gathered honor pints every week and then the honor was calculated against the total honor gathered by everyone on the server (this was before consolidated battlegroups) and players were assigned a rank based on how well they did in the weekly calculations.  Going up in rank meant that you got access to newer and better gear that could be purchased in the capital cities for a modest amount of gold.

Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it?

The Solution:
Blizzard still hasn’t quite figured this one out.  They started by switching the PVP system to a straight buy system where honor points were accumulated on a daily basis and made available the next day to buy items in game.  When that didn’t quite work out they moved to the current system where  the best PVP items in the game are available as arena rewards are available for players who want to be on the cutting edge of competition while the arena rewards from previous seasons are available in exchange for honor points for players who want to PVP but don’t like the crushing competition of the arena system.

The Inevitable Backlash:
Turns out the arenas aren’t that popular, and participation has been on the decline steadily with each new season.  Players also complain that being able to buy PVP gear for honor invalidates the whole system since anyone could conceivably get ahold of the PvP gear if they invested enough time into battlegrounds.  Those people also tend to miss the point that the entire game is all about people investing enough time to get high end gear whether that time is spent in raids, arenas, or the battleground.  Overall, however, the current honor system provides a nice alternative way of gearing up for players who are only interested in the PVP side of the game without affecting raid balance, as most of the PVP gear and PVP specs don’t easily translate to PVE situations.
